What the numbers on a pool screen roll actually mean
Two numbers do most of the work on a pool screen datasheet, and they measure different things.

A 20×20 fabric at approximately 176 g/m² and a 20×20 fabric at approximately 305 g/m² have the same opening geometry but very different handling strength, tear resistance and roll weight.
Retail listings usually publish only one of these. Our own catalogue lists a 20×20 no-see-um product with a displayed wire diameter of approximately 0.013 inch, which is the third variable — count, weight and yarn diameter together describe the fabric, and any one of them alone leaves the buyer guessing.
For a distributor holding inventory, the practical consequence is simple: two rolls labelled “20×20 pool screen” from two suppliers can differ by 70% in fabric weight, and your installer customers will notice within one season.

These are individual product examples. Do not read the 133–305 g/m² spread as a universal range for every pool screen product, and do not transfer one model’s weight, wire diameter or roll size to another model in the same count.
The trade-off across this table is real, not cosmetic. Moving from approximately 176 g/m² to approximately 305 g/m² at the same 20×20 count buys tear resistance and installation forgiveness, and costs airflow, transparency and roughly 70% more fabric weight per container. Moving the other way lightens freight and improves the view, and it makes the fabric less tolerant of over-tensioning during spline installation. Neither direction is the “better” mesh; they answer different complaints from different climates.

Fiberglass, polyester or vinyl-coated polyester
Material family sits underneath the count and weight figures, and it drives more of the field performance than most spec sheets suggest.
Стекловолокно carries the majority of pool and patio counts. It does not crease permanently, which matters when rolls are folded during shipping or re-screening, and it holds dimensional stability under tension. It is the default for 17×14, 18×14 and 20×20 pool fabrics.
Полиэстер appears in our 20×17 heavy-duty pool product. Polyester yarn tolerates repeated impact better than fiberglass and is the reasonable choice where panels take foot traffic, furniture contact or pool equipment knocks.

Roll width, length and how packing changes your landed cost
Mesh specification decides whether the fabric works. Roll geometry decides whether the order is profitable.
Roll width and length on our pool and patio fabrics are model-specific and customizable, which is an advantage that goes unused surprisingly often. Buyers order a standard width, then their installer customers cut 30 cm of waste off every panel for the whole season.
Three width questions worth resolving before a first order:
- What panel heights dominate your customers’ work? Pool cage panels are commonly cut to full bay height. A roll width that matches the dominant bay height turns cross-cutting into a single operation and removes selvedge waste.
- Does your warehouse handle long rolls? Longer rolls reduce roll-change downtime for fabricators and reduce packaging per m², but they need racking and two-person handling.
- Is the fabric being re-packed for retail? Fabric supplied for cut-to-length counter sales is packed differently from fabric supplied for project fabrication, and the decision affects carton design, labelling and barcode requirements.
Compared with the retail-packaged replacement screen sold by home-improvement chains, roll-format supply shifts the cutting operation to you or your customer. That is a margin opportunity if you have a cutting station and a cost if you do not.
